The year was 2050. After a great war the United Nations gather. Global warming is starting to show true effects, pollution is rampant, oil is starting to dry out. The United States, Russia, and a small coalition of European resent the unthinkable. Terra forming mars, and colonizing the surface. Initially they are waved off as dreamers. However, 10 years later World War Three erupts. The only thing keeping the war turning into the Nuclear Apocalypse was a "strategic intervention" from the UN. The other countries finally see why the need to begin terraforming Mars. They agreed to halt all large scale advancements and creation of weapons to focus all resources on the project.
200 years later Mars is finally habitable. Test animals are sent to breed and to test the atmosphere all all survive. The first colonists land on Mars. However, a major problem has become clear, Mars is not as hospitable as they had hoped. Through the terraforming process something went wrong, and complex machinery fails shortly after arriving. Only the best made machinery will last more than a month. In addition to forcing supply and colonist drop offs to move quickly is pushed technology back a century and the colonists were faced with the difficulties of colonizing with old technology.
With the gangs starting to become even in number with the little law enforcement there is things are becoming dangerous. All the weak can do is hope to survive, all the strong can do is wait until they die, and most are trapped on the planet, due to the high cost of a ferry home.
